In a very short op-ed piece in the Christian Science Monitor, Laura Seahy, who has a very interesting blog, called Texas in Africa, argues that using US troops to arrest Joseph Kony would be a terrible idea. What do you think? She has some really interesting things to say about DIY aid in Africa, too. Shane, you might want to check out her blog for your project.
I'm surprised to hear that Kony is still believed to be alive and wanted. We talked in class a lot about how his army would keep the war going without him, seems like others believe that capturing him would help stop the horrible war. I am glad that Obama has agreed to help, but I don't think sending US troops is a great idea, most of the time we get blamed for causing more problems after our entry into the said country. I hope that aid can come from within Africa and that Kony can be captured. It seems that they have a good handle on where he is, but not quite how to get to him.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Jamie. First off, I can't believe that the guy is still around. Although a applaud Obama's desire to help, I don't think sending U.S. troops into the conflict would be beneficial for ourselves, or the countries involved in Africa. If anything, it would be best I think if our administration offered guidance and strategies to the African governments as to how to extract Kony and defuse further conflict.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you guys, but it still puts me back that they would think this is a bad idea if he was still alive. Yeah it may make it worse for a period of time, but maybe it would slowly kill the movement of Kony.
